Some kids are just reluctant readers and so we need to find a way to help support them because reading is a big part of life -
Graphic Novels or Comics - These books are very popular right now and appeal to almost all kids, especially boys
Break the Bedtime Rules - Let them stay up a little later so they can read or read under the covers with a flashlight. You can even buy a headlamp for them to put on and read with. SO FUN
Reading on their Screens - We talk so much about reducing screen time. Why not let them read their favorite book on an iPad or Kindle?
Read a Book that is a Movie - Find a book that has a movie version and read it together before you see the movie. This will be motivation to read it quick so you can go see the show.
Family Book Club - Who doesn't love getting together to eat munchies and talk about books. Everyone in the house reads the same book and then you get together and talk about it.
You Start, They Finish - Sometimes it is just hard for kids to get into the book. If you start by reading aloud, they will often take over. Or you can share the responsibility and each read a page or a chapter before you switch.
Book Bucks - Instead of allowance, give them books bucks. They can earn them and then go to the store to buy something they are really excited about.
Encourage them to Read ANYTHING - Menus, TV show descriptions, signs, magazines, newspapers - anything that is interesting to them.
